Creating a class website at Oakton

The IT department has gone to great lengths to support the development of class websites. Their step-by-step instructions for planning your web presence at Oakton will guide you through the basics of creating a home page on he Oakton server for your classes. Be sure to read about Oakton's web standards -- faculty pages for classes are considered to be Level 3.

Oakton IT can also give you up-to-date information on the availability of Blackboard and other online tools for class support. See IT's web resources for other cool tools and links.

The key is to remember that all faculty are given their own space on servercc that is identified with your login name. The same login and password work for accessing your email and the Oakton network.

In your space you have a folder called public.www. Anything that you put into that folder can be accessed from the Internet. For example, let's assume that Prof. John Smithie's login name is jsmithie. If John has used DreamWeaver or another tool to create a home page for his class, all he has to do is name the page index.htm. To post the page, he simply places it in his public.www folder. The URL for his page is http://servercc.oakton.edu/~jsmithie/index.htm

How to FTP Files to Oakton

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a way you can move files from one computer location (network) to another. For faculty, FTP is a fantastic tool that allows you to move your class files to your space on the Oakton server (servercc). You can also maintain class web pages by adding or deleting files from your personal computer. This is so much better than using sneaker transfer -- bringing your files to school on a disk!

There are two ways to transfer files: using your Netscape browser or downloading an FTP program for free or at low cost. The FTP program will give you greater flexibility to create folders, move files and perform other tasks.

Do not be intimidated by the idea of downloading a program and learning to use it. These programs are simple to use.

Julia Gray, Technology Supervisor at RHC, has provided the school with everything we need to know about using FTP at Oakton. Visit the IT Knowledge Bank for other helpful information.
