Computer Networking(Also see Computer Application
Software, Computer Information Systems,
Electronics and Computer Technology, Computer
Office Technology and World Wide Web.)
Computer networks link individuals so they can share hardware and software applications, communicate effectively, increase productivity, and improve data security. The demand for individuals who can design, implement, maintain and manage local area network (LANs) is virtually insatiable. Numerous positions exist for people with varying levels of expertise in this field of computer technology. Oakton offers several certificates in Microsoft, Novell and Cisco which focus on the design, configuration, management and maintenance of network software and hardware. The Local Area Networking certificates include prerequisite courses from the Computer Information Systems and Electronics and Computer Technology programs to emphasize a comprehensive understanding of the computer hardware and software used in the business environment as well as the requisite LAN software.. Oakton certificates prepare students for Microsoft, Novell engineering and Cisco certification tests. Qualified students who wish to sit for these as well as other certification examinations can make arrangements for these examinations through instructional Support Services at the Ray Hartstein Campus, 847-635-1446, or at the Des Plaines campus, 847-635-1939. All certificates in computer networking provide knowledge of and hands-on experience with current network hardware and software. Coordinator: Bridget Archer, (847) 635-1967.
