Joan Warmbold Boggs

Education Background:

  • B.A. University of Illinois
  • M.A. Western Michigan University

Teaching Philosophy:

First and foremost, I love teaching and I love the field of psychology. My enthusiasm is contagious, as my students often have told me. I feel that my first and foremost responsibility is to make the material as interesting and lively as possible. After all, what could and should be more interesting than the study of human behavior?? However, I also feel a strong responsibility to ensure that the material is clear and comprehensible to my students. I develop my own Study Guide for each course that contains study questions over the reading assignments, class activity sheets, video question sheets and other pertinent articles and handouts. Students consistently have told me how very much they appreciate this study guide as the questions make it crystal clear what topics and specific issues will be covered on the essay tests. I also believe in testing fairly often, around every two weeks, so that students don't feel overwhelmed when preparing for tests.

My special interests within psychology include child psychology and the function of the brain. I worked for a few years in the Infant Care Program at Evanston Hospital and the information about parenting and infants that I acquired while in this position has proved to be invaluable. I have worked on hotlines for parents in crises.

Here at Oakton I served as Chair of the Human Services Program for seven years. A few years ago I was a finalist for the Best Teacher of the Year (Ray Hartstein Award).

Other Information:

I completed two years of doctoral work at the University of Illinois, which included conducting research at the Center for Reading. I have a certificate in Infant Mental Health from the Erikson Institute.
