Teaching Philosophy:
I love to learn and I love to teach, and I especially love teaching psychology at Oakton. I am a first-generation college graduate, and understand some of the issues for first-generation students here at Oakton. Diverse backgrounds and experiences enrich the classroom. I try to communicate my love of learning, and my love of psychology in all my classes.
I try to create a casual, open-minded and accepting environment where ideas can be discussed and challenged. The classroom should be a place of exploration and discovery. I love relevant questions and even debate. They almost always improve the quality of the class. I try to make the material as engaging and interesting as possible.
Most often, my goal is not just to “cover” what you read, but to structure class so that you make more and deeper sense of it. It is your job to ask questions any time you are unclear about something we read or discuss. I don't like busy work. The homework and projects I assign are to help you make connections between the material and the outside world, or to learn something new about yourself. I will help you try to see psychology outside of the classroom. This often happens as we work our way through a course.
I use a variety of teaching methods, such as lectures, small and large group activities, and the occasional experiment. I try to make sure that we have enough time to think, discuss and problem-solve. Learning occurs in many ways. I try to get to know your learning style and personality in order to provide the best learning environment possible. I try to be flexible and fair, while still expecting the best from you. I will respect your opinions and expect you to respect other students' opinions.
I am very reachable – during office hours and email. I even give out my personal cell phone number so that you can always find me when you need me.
I want to devote my compassion, energy and love for knowledge to impact my corner of the world. I try to make learning fun and accessible for everyone. I enjoy getting to know new students, and developing new relationships. It is not uncommon for me to stay in touch with former students because we have created such a close bond during a course.
Accomplishments: "My two bright, interesting and wonderful children."
