MBA AND BUSINESS SUCCESS

Is an MBA Your Only Option for Business Success?

You want to move ahead in your career. You've got a degree, but it's not in business. Or maybe you don't have degree at all. You feel you're being held back because you lack the understanding of business and business skills of others in your organization. Your friends in the company are all talking about needing more business knowledge and skills but they're not sure exactly how to go about getting them or they don't know what the company is really looking for. Is an MBA your only option for success?
First of all MBA stands for Masters of Business Administration. This means you typically need to already have a bachelor's degree to even enroll in such a program. The program quite often is comprised of 45 to 55 semester credit hours of course work. This means it might take you between 2-4 years to attain such a degree taking a normal load of three classes a semester (including summers). You will take core and elective classes in such topics as management, economics, finance, marketing, accounting, and information technology. At the end of the process you will have a graduate degree consisting of general business functional knowledge with concentrated work in a couple of functional areas. It's a lot of work and may not be what your company or you really need or want. So, what are your options?

Research by the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that in the 21st Century people will need more education beyond high school than ever before. However, that education does not have to be specifically degree-related. Employers are looking for all kinds of education and training that will bring value to their businesses. More and more certificates and certifications are becoming the standard "currency" to tell employers what you can do for them. At Oakton many people with degrees and without are coming to take courses and earn certificates that mean something to them and their employers. They are discovering that the certificates provide focused education that develops valuable skills employers are willing to pay for.
