Prerequisites and Essential Skills

 

Prerequisites

Attendance at one of Oakton’s Massage Therapy Information Sessions
Success in the Oakton/ASIS massage therapy program is predicated on knowledge of English reading skills. Students are required to score a minimum of 55 on the reading test offered through the college.

 

Essential Skills

Physical

  • Massage therapy classes involve lifting, stretching and standing over a period of one or two hours.

  • The program requires the full range of motion of joints and fine motor movements of hands, as well as the ability to perform repetitive tasks and the ability to stoop, bend, twist, reach and sometimes kneel and squat.

Emotional

  • Massage students must respond in an emotionally controlled and professional manner in varied patient care and educational situations.

Note: Applicants for licensure in the State of Illinois must be 18 years of age and of good moral character and are required to pass a criminal background check.
