Oakton Courses using X

For host csc.oakton.edu

A) Connecting to the UNIX account

1.a) Turn on the computer and the monitor.

2.a)
After the logon screen appears, use your user information to logon to the OCCNet. Your userid is the first letter of your first name in lower case followed by the first seven letters of your last name in lower case followed by the last 4 digits of your Oakstar identification number.  Your location is the last digit of your social security number followed by .academic.oakton   Your password is your birth date in the 6 digit format MMDDYY.  See your instructor or a lab aid if you cannot logon.

3.a)
Use the mouse to click on the Start icon, then point to the All Programs menu and then point to the NAL Explorer sub-menu. After this point to the Internet Software menu. Finally, click on the Telnet csc.oakton.edu icon that begins a telnet session with your host.

4.a)
Logon to your machine using your UNIX userid and password.  These are the same as your OCCNet userid and password.  You do not need a location for your UNIX account.

5.a)
At the command prompt, issue the vncserver command.  You will be prompted for your VNC password which should again be your birth date in the 6 digit format MMDDYY.  You will need to verify this password by typing it in twice, but you will only need to do this step the first time that you run vncserver.  After you verify the password, the command will respond with a statement that indicates the VNC port number.  For example, the following response indicates that your VNC session can use port 6.  Remember your port number for this session, it may be different every time that you login.
New 'X' desktop is online:6

6.a) Use the mouse to click on the Start icon, go once again to the All Programs menu and then point to the NAL Explorer sub-menu.  After this point to the Internet Software menu.  Finally, click on the VNC Viewer icon.

7.a)
A window will open asking for connection details.  Your response should be csc.oakton.edu:port_number.  If step 5.a) indicated that your VNC port number is 6, you would respond as follows.
csc.oakton.edu:6

8.a) You will again be prompted for your VNC password and should respond with your birth date in the 6 digit format MMDDYY.  You will need to issue this password every time that you run VNC Viewer.

9.a)
At this point, an xterm will open and you should consult your current laboratory exercise.

2.b)
Print your program in the file named my.file with the command printer 1234 my.file where 1234 is the room number for your lab. Skokie labs such as A241 should be entered as 241. Retrieve your copy from the printer.

3.b)
The command exit will log you out from the xterm in your VNC session. You will also need to close the gray X background by clicking on the boxed × in the upper right-hand corner of the window.

4.b)
To close down your telnet session, again use the exit command at the prompt within the telnet window.
