Logging on to the OCCnet and starting up Derive
for Windows
Turn on the computer and the monitor. When prompted, keystroke the
Ctrl-Alt-Del
sequence and the login screen will appear. Enter your userid, location
and password for the OCCnet. Use the mouse to highlight the Start
menu, click on the NAL Explorer sub-menu, and then find and access
the Math Software menu. Finally, click on the Derive for Windows
icon.
Entering or Editing Algebraic Expressions
To enter an algebraic expression, use the mouse to highlight the Author
menu, followed by the Expression sub-menu. Alternately, you can
click on the pencil icon. To edit an expression, use the mouse or the arrow
keys to highlight it in the algebra window. Click on the Edit menu
and highlight the Expression sub-menu.
Graphing Â2
or Â3
expressions that have
been entered in the Algebra window
If there is already a 2-D plot or 3-D plot window open,
merely click on that window. If there is only an Algebra window
open, change from the Algebra window to the plot window by
using your mouse to open the Window menu and take either the New
2-D plot Window or New 3-D plot Window. Alternately, you can
click on the xy icon for Â2
plots or the xyz icon for Â3
plots. Then, click on the Plot! menu, or click again on the icon
that transferred you from the Algebra window.
Zooming in and out of graphs
The three arrow out can zoom out on the graph vertically, horizontally
or both. The arrow in icons can zoom in on the graph vertically, horizontally
or both.
Deleting Â2
and Â3 graphs
The xy plot with an X icon can be used to delete the last Â2
graph drawn. Other deletions can be accessed under the Edit menu
and then the Delete Plot menu. Â3
graphs are restricted to one graph per window, so to delete the graph,
close the window by clicking on X icon that appears in the upper left-hand
corner of that window.
Other useful Â2
options
To change between Euclidean and Polar coordinates, choose the Options
menu followed by the Coordinate System menu. Tracing is controlled
by the horizontal arrows keys after choosing the Options menu followed
by the Trace Mode.
Evaluation of expressions
Click on the equals icon to calculate an exact, closed answer to your
problem. Alternately, you can click on the Simplify menu followed
by the Basic sub-menu. Click on the approximate icon to calculate
a numerical approximation to your problem. Alternately, you can click on
the Simplify menu followed by the Approximate sub-menu.
Manipulation of expressions
Click on the SUB icon to substitute for one of the variables in your
expression. Alternately, choose the Simplify menu followed by the
Substitute
for sub-menu. Click on the Magnifying glass icon to solve your expression
for one of the variables. Alternately, choose the Solve menu followed
by the Algebraically sub-menu.
Evaluation of limits and series
Click on the lim icon to enter a limit to be evaluated. Alternately,
choose the Calculus menu and then the Limit sub-menu. Click
on the sigma icon to enter a function for the n'th term of a series. Alternately,
choose the Calculus menu and then the Sum sub-menu.
Evaluation of derivatives and integrals
Click on the Partial derivative icon to enter a derivative to be evaluated.
Alternately, choose the Calculus menu and then the Differentiate
sub-menu. Click on the Integral icon to enter a function to be integrated.
Alternately, choose the Calculus menu and then the Integrate
sub-menu. Definite integrals will allow you to enter limits of integration.
Taylor and Maclaurin expansions
Choose the Calculus menu followed by the Taylor series
sub-menu.
Loading Math or Utility files
Choose the File menu followed by the Load sub-menu. Then
choose either the Math or Utility sub-menu. Each of these
allows you to find the file from any available path on your machine or
network. Finally, click on the Open button.
