Congratulations to Lilith Bat-leah

Congratulations to Lilith Bat-Leah who received the Departmental Award for Outstanding Achievement in Humanities and Philosophy for the 2008-2009 academic year. Lilith has completed two student-faculty philosophy seminars. Lilith was also named Honors Student of the Year.

Congratulations to Susan Doll

Susan Doll, a long-time film instructor in our department, has just published a new book, Elvis for Dummies. Susan Doll is the author of several other books as well.

Dr. David Ingram Speaks at Oakton

On Wednesday, April 22, 2009, Dr. David Ingram of Loyola University spoke on "Ethics and Immigration" at the Philosophy Department's yearly public forum. Over 200 students and faculty attended his talk. Afterwards Dr. Ingram met with the participant's in the department's student-faculty seminar. Seminar participants had read articles by Dr. Ingram and engaged in lively debate with him about his positions.

Dr. Ingram's main research interests are in ethics, social and political philosophy, and critical theory – especially in the work of Jurgen Habermas. He is the author of many books including /Rights, Democracy, and Fulfillment in the Era of Identity Politics: Principled Compromises in a Compromised World/ in 2004 and /Group Rights: Reconciling Equality and Difference/ in 2000. Professor of Philosophy Tom Bowen Appointed Co-Coordinator of Honors Program

This fall Tom Bowen will become Co-Coordinator of the Honors Program with George Lungu of the Political Science Department. Tom has taught numerous honors classes - including three different core seminars. Tom also was one of the faculty members who took students to Washington, D.C. last january to participate in the Washington Center's class on the Presidential Transition and to attend the inauguration of President Barack Obama.



Professor Kathleen Carot Elected President of OCCFA

Kathleen Carot was elected president of Oakton's full-time faculty union. Kathleen's willingness to campaign for this position was especially impressive since she was also dealing with a major elbow injury this semester. Kathleen will be continuing as coordinator of the Women's and Gender Studies Program.

Daniel just officially received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. Daniel's dissertation is on

Congratualtions to Dr. David Hunter

David has just received his Ph.D. in music composition with a minor field in ethnomusicology from the University of Chicago. David teaches Introduction to Music and World Music at Oakton.

Congratulations to Kate Zambreno.

Kate's first novel, O Fallen Angel, is being published through Chiasmus Press as the winner of their First Book contest, which was called "Undoing the Novel." Kate teaches Women and Creativity as well as Contemporary Culture and the Arts at Oakton.
