| I liked what it seems to have done for students -- it made them
think of what they owed their fellow man (and woman).
I think the students who did the service were connected to the college
in a special way. They could bring something to the community of
students in the class and they could bring Oakton outside to the wider
community.
Students who have immigrated to the United States from other countries
are willing and able to move into their communities in a meaningful way;
they seem to have a built-in service ethic.
Students have rarely been asked to give back to their communities.
Although initially reluctant to take on a service assignment, once they
take that step and experience the rewards of service they become enthusiastic.
Many of my students report that they plan to continue to give their time
to a community agency even after the assignment is completed.
With service-learning students discover that they have much that
they can contribute to the community. I feel rewarded when
they write what they have learned about themselves as a result of their
service to others.
