- While both volunteering and service learning are based on the notion that you give your time free of charge to some community agency, service learning is different from volunteering in one important sense. When you take on a service project, you do so with the explicit understanding that your activity will contribute to the learning that occurs in this course over the semester because your professor has designed this activity with this goal in mind.
