Why is my professor using service learning?

While your professor realizes that this activity may require more time and effort than the traditional out-of-class assignments, he/she believes that the experience you have in providing a service out in the community will enhance your overall learning in this course.  There is a growing body of evidence that demonstrates that students learn best when they apply their knowledge to a real-life context; service learning makes this possible.
