After four years of working out of various faculty offices, the service
learning program now has a home of its own. You can find us in room
2144 on the Des Plaines campus; our telephone number is 376-7030. Stop
by our new office and find out more about service learning and how you
can get involved.

This year we begin a new initiative with the American Association of Community
Colleges and the Center for Civic Education. The Center for Civic
Education has developed a curriculum for use in middle school classrooms
called "Project Citizen." As part of a pilot project, Oakton Community
College, along with five other community colleges across the nation, will
be recruiting commuity college students to serve as mentors in middle schools
around our district.

As we finish our third year of participation in the American Association
of Community College's "Broadening Horizons Through Service Learning" project,
we continue to grow. This past semester we had over 350 students
who engaged in service out in more that 125 agencies out in the community.
