Reading and Writing Courses

EGL 071 and EGL 074

Academic Reading and Study Skills for the Non-Native Speaker I
Academic Writing for the Non-Native Speaker I


EGL 071 is an introductory course in academic reading and study skills for the non-native speaker preparing to take courses for college credit. EGL 071 is offered only in tandem with EGL 074.
Prerequisite: Placement based upon reading assessment.
EGL 074 is an introductory academic grammar and composition course for the non-native speaker preparing to take courses for college credit. It will introduce the student to the foundations of sentence structure and paragraph types required in higher level writing courses. EGL 074 is offered only in tandem with EGL 071.
Prerequisite: Placement based upon writing assessment.

EGL 072
is an intermediate course in academic reading and study skills for the non-native speaker preparing to take courses for college credit. EGL 072 is offered only in tandem with EGL 075.

EGL 073
is an advanced course in academic reading and study skills for the non-native speaker preparing to take courses for college credit. EGL 073 is offered only in tandem with EGL 076.
Prerequisite: Placement based upon reading assessment.
EGL 076 is an advanced academic grammar and composition course for the non-native speaker preparing to take courses for college credit. EGL 076 is offered only in tandem with EGL 073.
Prerequisite: Placement based upon writing assessment.

EGL 089

4 credits

Academic Reading and Study Skills for Non-Native Speakers IV
This course focuses on non-native student needs for successful academic reading and study strategies. Vocabulary building will receive special attention.

EGL 090
3 credits

Composition for the Non-Native Speaker IV
This course is designed for the non-native student who can write a basic essay but who needs more work to achieve college level composition skills.
Prerequisite: Placement based upon writing assessment. Fee $7.50

Speaking and Listening Courses
EGL 078
3 credits

Speaking and Listening for Non-Native Speakers I
This course is designed for the person whose native language is not English. The course teaches a variety of speaking and listening functions and provides opportunities for practice and feedback. Work on speech patterns, grammar, and vocabulary as related to successful spoken communication will also be included. EGL 078 is repeatable up to six hours.
Prerequisite: Placement into Oakton ESL reading/writing courses (using WSAT and DRP scores) or oral interview.

EGL 079
3 credits

Pronunciation for the Non-Native Speaker I
This course designed to help students improve their pronunciation of standard American English. Students will work on improving their production and understanding of the sound patterns of English. The instructor will give each student individual help whenever possible.
Prerequisite: Moderately good ability to read and understand English, reflected by placement in Oakton's college ESL courses, or consent of instructor.

EGL 081
3 credits

Speaking and Listening for Non-Native Speakers II
This course is designed for the person whose native language is not English but who has achieved the proficiency level expected of students completing EGL 078. The course teaches a variety of speaking and listening functions with a focus on expressing and understanding complex ideas and discussing academic topics in an academic setting. Work on speech patterns, grammar, and vocabulary as related to successful spoken communication will also be included. EGL 081 is repeatable up to six hours.
Prerequisite: EGL 078 or permission of instructor or ESL coordinator.

EGL 082
4 credits

Basic Grammar for the Non-Native Speaker
This course is designed for intensive practice in basic grammar skills, such as correct use of basic verb tenses, possessives, modals, compound sentence structures, adverbials, adjectives, articles, and prepositions.
Prerequisite: Placement in EGL 074 or higher.

EGL 083
4 credits

Intermediate Grammar for the Non-Native Speaker
This course is designed for intensive practice in intermediate grammar skills, such as correct use of the perfect tenses, perfect modals, subordinate clauses, phrasal verbs, and passive voice.
Prerequisite: Placement in EGL 076; students receiving an EGL 076 placement after completing EGL 076 should enroll in EGL 082.
