Joint Educational
Agreements
Oakton offers a number of programs in cooperation with nearby community
colleges. When a joint agreement is in effect, students may enroll in the
program and pay the in-district tuition rate of the college offering the
program. The number of District 535 residents accepted into these programs
will vary. Students may obtain information on a particular program directly
from the community college offering it. Some of the courses required for
these curricula may be taken at Oakton if this meets with the approval
of the school granting the degree.
To participate, contact the Admissions Office at the college where you
will be attending school to obtain appropriate forms and approvals.

International
Studies/Study Abroad
As a member of the Illinois Consortium for International Studies and
Programs (ICISP) along with some 38 other midwest colleges, Oakton is able
to offer its students the opportunity to spend the fall or spring semester
abroad in England or Austria, the spring semester in the Netherlands or
a summer session in Costa Rica. Two-week exchanges in the Netherlands are
available to students enrolled in several career programs.* Course offerings
meet requirements for graduation, and all credit is granted through Oakton
Community College.
To be eligible, students must have completed 15 to 24 hours of college-credit
courses, including English 101, having maintained a GPA of 2.75. For those
who qualify, some scholarship funding is available through the Oakton Community
College Educational Foundation and other sources.
Canterbury, England
In Canterbury, about an hour and a half from London by train, students
attend classes at Christ Church College, which enrolls nearly 2,500 students
from England and other countries. They take 12 hours of courses with both
Illinois and British students. Part of the curriculum includes the study
of British culture and social institutions and a program of class field
trips. Students stay in local homes and have access to all college facilities
and activities.
Salzburg, Austria
In Salzburg, famed as the birthplace of Mozart and home of the Salzburg
Music Festival, students take classes at Salzburg College, a private liberal
arts college which enrolls students from throughout the U.S. and several
foreign countries. Participants take 15 hours of course work, including
a seminar on Austrian civilization. Instruction is in English, although
students are required to study the German language during their stay. Here,
too, students are housed with local families.
San Jose, Costa Rica
The summer session in San Jose, developed by faculty at the College
of DuPage and made available to ICISP member colleges, is designed for
students of the Spanish language. Students will enroll in a Spanish language
class at the appropriate level and a course in Latin American Civilization
and Culture, for a total of seven semester hours of credit. Participants
will be interviewed and tested to determine proper placement prior to departure.
Students stay in the homes of local host families and have a series of
five field trips included in the program.
Cuernavaca, Mexico
Cuernavaca, Mexico is the ideal location for this summer study abroad
program sponsored by Black Hawk College. Located in the heart of colonial
Mexico, the cite of Cuernavaca is the capital and largest city in the
State of Morelos. Instruction is offered at the Instituto de Idioma y
Cultura en Cuernavaca (ICC). Field trips are an integral part of the Cuernavaca
Study Abroad program. Students will participate in field trips to many
interesting sites in Mexico and and optional field trip to Acapulco is
also available. Housing is provided in private homes in Cuernavaca. Staying
with a Mexican family is an integral and rewarding part of this program.
Kyoto, Japan
The program sponsored by College of DuPage at Kyoto International Academy
provides intensive language study combined with independent cultural projects,
field trips, and after school activities. This integrated approach comes
alive because the whole community serves as a giant classroom and language
laboratory for students. Participans will be able to practice and improve
their knowledge of the language by interacting with the Japanese people
in the street, on buses, in museums, theaters, shops, restaurants and
cafes, and with their host family. A variet of field trips and excursions
are planned throughout the program.
Munich, Germany
In this program offered by College of DuPage, students will learn and
practice German in the classroom and in natural settings. The program
includes a variety of field trips and excursions to museums, movies and
theater, and places of interest in and near the city of Munich. Students
will live in a bed and breakfast for the first five days of the program
and will then move to the homes of host families in Munich for the remaining
four weeks of the program. German language classes will meet weekday mornings.
Students may sign up for additional sessions of business German as well.
Dijon, France
This summer program is offered by Parkland College at the Centre International
d'Etudes Francaises of the University Burgundy. This intensive study program
is designed for students of all ages with a minimum of one year of college
French who are interested in increasing proficiency in spoken French and
gaining an understanding of life in modern France. Every week, students
take 20 hours of classes conducted by university faculty. Students are
housed in modern university dorms at the university, with access to campus
dining hall and student activities. The program includes field trips to
Paris, Loire Valley, and Burgundy regions, home and city visits, a full
cultural agenda in a setting with an international student body.
