Aseptic Pharmaceutical Preparations

Aseptic Pharmaceutical Preparations

Aseptic Pharmaceutical Preparations, a 5-credit course offered in partnership with MRxI Corporation, provides the instruction and knowledge necessary to guide health care institutions and employees toward compliance with new federal regulations for safe compounding of sterile preparations. These regulations (collectively known as USP 797) protect patients and staff from disease and infection.

Students currently enrolled in Oakton's pharmacy technician program or those who have completed at least 2,000 hours of pharmacy technician practice in a health care system pharmacy should complete this certificate. The program also prepares students for other health care careers including pharmacy aide, pharmacist, and physician.

All classes are taught by professional pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and health care workers with training and background in the safe compounding of sterile preparations. Topics include mixing and handling parenteral drugs; parenteral drug therapy delivery systems; use of flow hood; identification of parenteral drug reference sources to determine compatibilities and stabilities of admixtures; identification of various intravenous access devices; preparation of care and monitoring strategies for home care patients receiving intravenous drug treatment; and safe handling of chemotherapeutic agents.
