       Course Name: Academic Writing for the Non-Native Speaker II

       Credits: 3 (3 lecture; 1 lab)

II.    Prerequisite

College or ESL program assessment test or successful completion (grade of “P”) in EGL 074

III.   Course (Catalog) Description

Intermediate academic grammar and composition course for the non native speaker preparing to take courses for college credit. Introduces the student to intermediate sentence structures and the short essay. EGL 075 is a mandatory course.

IV.   Learning Objectives

At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. use basic and low-intermediate grammatical structures of English in written work.
  2. write sentences that are grammatically and structurally correct.
  3. write structurally correct paragraphs.
  4. write short essays in English.

V.    Academic Integrity and Student Conduct

Students and employees at Oakton Community College are required to demonstrate academic integrity and follow Oakton's Code of Academic Conduct. This code prohibits:

• plagiarism (turning in work not written by you, or lacking proper citation),
• falsification and fabrication (lying or distorting the truth),

• any other behavior that violates academic integrity.

There are serious consequences to violations of the academic integrity policy. Oakton's policies and procedures provide students a fair hearing if a complaint is made against you. If you are found to have violated the policy, the minimum penalty is failure on the assignment and, a disciplinary record will be established and kept on file in the office of the Vice President for Student Affairs for a period of 3 years.

    2. Limiting the topic with a controlling idea and topic sentence
    3. Paragraph development
    4. Introduction to the essay
      1. Introductions, bodies, and conclusions
      2. Thesis statements
      3. Development and support

VIII. Course Practices Required

Course may be taught as a face-to-face, hybrid or online course.

Students will complete grammar exercises in class and at home, take quizzes, read short selections, and write and re-write paragraphs and essays in class and at home. Students will take a final exam to determine future placement. Students will work in the computer lab on writing and/or grammar.

Instructors will ordinarily select a grammar text and a writing text from the following:
  • Folse/Solomon/Clabeaux, Great Writing 3: From Great Paragraphs to Great Essays, Heinle, 2010
  • Fuchs/Bonner/Westheimer, Focus on Grammar 3: An Integrated Skills Approach, Pearson/Longman, 2012
  • Strauch, Writers at Work: The Short Composition, Cambridge, 2006

X.    Methods of Evaluating Student Progress

Students who complete EGL 075 with an “A,” “B” or “C”  average for the semester’s work will receive a grade of “P” and a placement of EGL 076.

Fifty percent of this final grade will be based on:
  • In class writing
  • Grammar quizzes and tests (including a mid-term and final grammar test)
  • Daily class work
  • Homework
Fifty percent of the final grade will be based on an in-class writing assignment at the end of the semester.
