Learning Outcomes

Graphic Design is a professional field of study based on the foundations of visual communications. It builds on these foundations to provide students with necessary skills for a variety of graphic design areas, enabling them to build a portfolio of work for admission to a baccalaureate degree-granting institution or art school, to acquire skills for employment, and/or to earn a certificate in Animation and Multimedia, Game Development, Web Graphic Page Design, or Photography. Practical experience and training are presented in areas including, but not limited to, web site creation, studio photography, video broadcast and sound production, World Wide Web, CD and game production, photojournalism and portraiture, 3D cut scene work, and project management.

A.A.S. Degree in Graphic Design

The A.A.S. degree in Graphic Design prepares students to build a portfolio of work for several purposes:

  • Take foundation courses for admission to a baccalaureate degree-granting institution/art school.
  • Develop skill levels for employment or to prepare for career change.
  • Take courses to improve a particular skill set for career advancement, for professionals currently employed in the field.
  • Explore personal or future professional interests by taking one or more courses.

Essential competencies include knowledge of and ability to apply the principles of design and to solve problems. In this program, students acquire in-depth experience with the tools of the discipline, including the latest computer hardware and software, along with other tools related to drawing, printing, photography, and time-based media. Each certificate program also includes a practicum to provide real-world work experience.

  • Solve communication and design problems
  • Use the tools of Graphic Design to create forms of visual communication. Tools include drawing, photography, printing, time-based media, worldwide web, and relevant hardware and software.
  • Create a portfolio of work that demonstrates the acquisition of these skills and presents work in a professional manner.
  • Observe basic business practices, including organization of design projects and working as a member of a team.

Certificate in Web Graphic Page Design

This program prepares students to combine design expertise and computer skills to create innovative web sites and obtain positions as web designers or web animators.

  • Demonstrate understanding of the fundamental principles of graphic design as they relate to web page design.
  • Use the basic tools and techniques of web page design, including relevant software.
  • Create a portfolio of web sites and web pages that demonstrate acquisition of the necessary skills.

Certificate in Animation and Multimedia

This program prepares students seeing a concentration in the production of time-based media, including animated graphics and multimedia.

Learning objectives

  • Demonstrate understanding of the fundamentals of design principles and formats, as they relate to animation and multimedia.
  • Use the basic tools and techniques of animation and multimedia, including software and special hardware.
  • Create a portfolio of animation/multimedia projects to demonstrate acquisition of the necessary skills.

Certificate in Game Development

This program prepares students for entry-level positions in the electronic gaming industry: 3D drawing and model builder, 2D texture artist, character builder, animator.

  • Demonstrate understanding of the fundamentals of graphic design principles as they relate to the development of electronic games.
  • Use the basic tools and techniques of animation and multimedia, including software and special hardware used in the production of games.
  • Demonstrate the basics of computer programming for game development.
  • Create a portfolio of work to demonstrate acquisition of the necessary skills.

Certificate in Photography

This program prepares students for entry-level positions in the photographic industry, including portraiture, photojournalism, lab processing, and studio photography.

Learning objectives

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of design as they apply to photographic media.
  • Use the basic tools of photographic production, including the mastery of materials, equipment, techniques, and processes used in digital photography, lighting, film, and the processing of images.
  • Demonstrate a functional knowledge of the history of photography and its aesthetic development.
  • Create a portfolio of work to demonstrate acquisition of the necessary skills.
