III.   Course (Catalog) Description

Course introduces principles of Project Management as defined by the Project Management Institute (PMI). Content includes experiential exercises and team participation to gain experience with computer-based project management procedures, and to increase basic familiarity with state-of-the-art project management software.  Credit cannot be received in both MGT 236 and CIS 236.

IV.   Learning Objectives

The student who successfully completes this course must:

  1. Understand the genesis of project management and its importance to improving the success of projects in a business setting.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of project management terms and techniques
  3. Understand the project management planning, implementation, and life cycle
  4. Tools and techniques of project management such as:
    1. Project selection methods
    2. Work breakdown structures
    3. Charting tasks and identifying the critical path
    4. Cost estimates
    5. Earned value analysis
    6. Motivation theory and team building
  5. Use state-of-the-art software to help plan and manage business and information technology projects
  6. Appreciate the importance of good project management
    1. Share his/her own examples of good and bad project management
    2. Use knowledge and skills developed in this class in other settings
  7. Be able to effectively define a problem and design a comprehensive solution.

V.    Academic Integrity and Student Conduct

If you are found to have violated the policy, the minimum penalty is failure on the assignment and, a disciplinary record will be established and kept on file in the office of the Vice President for Student Affairs for a period of 3 years.

Attend class regularly.  Successfully complete quizzes, exams, and project management projects which include individual and team activities.  Due to the nature of current best practices in this field, demonstration of written, verbal, and presentation skills will be required.

Evaluation will be based upon the grades received on presentations, assignments and exams.

This class will follow the guidelines set by ANSI-Standardized Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) and created by the Project Management Institute (PMI).

Application software used:  Office 2002 (Word, PowerPoint, VISIO), Windows XP or higher, Internet (for research), representative Project Management software.
