II.    Prerequisite

None

III.   Course (Catalog) Description

Course continues development of aural skills. Content includes modes, inversion, syncopation and compound meters, correlated with areas of sight singing and keyboard harmony. Course must be taken in tandem with MUS 122 (Music Theory II).

IV.   Learning Objectives

  1. To identify aurally the basic intervals, chords, scales, rhythms and meter signatures, correlated with areas of sight singing and keyboard harmony accurately describing played examples.
  2. To sight sing.
  3. To identify and play keyboard harmonies.

V.    Academic Integrity and Student Conduct

Students and employees at Oakton Community College are required to demonstrate academic integrity and follow Oakton's Code of Academic Conduct. This code prohibits:

• plagiarism (turning in work not written by you, or lacking proper citation),

There are serious consequences to violations of the academic integrity policy. Oakton's policies and procedures provide students a fair hearing if a complaint is made against you. If you are found to have violated the policy, the minimum penalty is failure on the assignment and, a disciplinary record will be established and kept on file in the office of the Vice President for Student Affairs for a period of 3 years.

VI.   Sequence of Topics

Representative topics such as:

  1. modal forms (ascending and descending)
    1. Dorian
    2. Phrygian
    3. Lydian
    4. Mixolydian
    5. Locrian
  2. major, minor, diminished and augmented triads in first and second inversion
  3. rhythmic patterns including ties and syncopation
  4. compound meter signatures
  5. two-part melodies of eighth measures length
  6. functional piano skills (both hands)

VII.  Methods of Instruction

Instruction includes lecture, explanation, dictation, and performance of aural skills.
Course may be taught as face-to-face, hybrid or online course.

VIII. Course Practices Required

Sight sing treble and bass clef melodies from Berkowitz level II.
Keyboard application of four part harmonic progressions.
Dictation of the various skills listed in outline of topics.

IX.   Instructional Materials

  1. Handouts and printed music will be supplied.
  2. Computer software as appropriate.

X.    Methods of Evaluating Student Progress

There will be examinations and quizzes.  Each examination will be based on the content of the assigned material and on information presented in class by the instructor.
