Consent of instructor.

III.   Course (Catalog) Description

Course deals with percussion studies to produce complete percussion solo and ensemble music. Intended for students who have no previous experience other than preparatory work in reading snare drum music. Recommended: Basic snare drum study.

IV.   Learning Objectives

  1. To demonstrate advanced skills developed in percussion performance.
  2. To play advanced mallet instruments, marimba and vibraharp.
  3. To perform in concert.

V.    Academic Integrity and Student Conduct

Students and employees at Oakton Community College are required to demonstrate academic integrity and follow Oakton's Code of Academic Conduct. This code prohibits:

• plagiarism (turning in work not written by you, or lacking proper citation),
• falsification and fabrication (lying or distorting the truth),

There are serious consequences to violations of the academic integrity policy. Oakton's policies and procedures provide students a fair hearing if a complaint is made against you. If you are found to have violated the policy, the minimum penalty is failure on the assignment and, a disciplinary record will be established and kept on file in the office of the Vice President for Student Affairs for a period of 3 years.

VI.   Sequence of Topics

Representative topics such as:

  1. Mallets:
    Chromatic Scale (entire range)
    All Major Scales—-two octave (recognized by key signature)
  2. Techniques:
    Play techniques for various percussion instruments, such as:  Bass, Drum, Cymbals, Tom-Toms, Triangle, and Tambourine.
  3. Sight Reading:
    Percussion Ensemble literature that writing basic mallet skills along with Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Cymbals, Tom-Toms, Triangle, and Tambourine.

VII.  Methods of Instruction

By lecture, technique demonstration and performance skills.  Individual assistance given to aid student’s progress.


Course may be taught as face-to-face, hybrid or online course.

VIII. Course Practices Required

  1. Weekly attendance is expected and required. 
  2. A minimum of thirty minutes a day of practice will be expected for the course.
  3. Final exam.

  1. "Percussion Studies" by T. Brown and W. Musser, "Techniques of Playing Bass Drum, Cymbals and Accessories" by A. Payson, "Percussion in the School Music Program" by A. Payson and J. McKenzie.
  2. Varied percussion music for concert and ensemble performance.
  3. Original composition/arrangements by students.

X.    Methods of Evaluating Student Progress

  1. Attendance and participation.
  2. Playing skills for jury recitals, percussion ensemble music, and stage presence.
  3. Final exam.
