III.   Course (Catalog) Description

Courses offer private study in specialized areas. Strongly recommended that student who desires to study piano, voice, etc. complete all class levels offered for that particular instrument (class piano, class voice, etc.). Intent of applied music is to increase ability to perform more advanced music from all periods and styles. Arrangements must be made through the music faculty who arrange lessons in piano, voice, band and orchestra instruments.

In-depth study of the clarinet in order to increase the student’s ability to perform artistically from all periods and styles.

V.    Academic Integrity and Student Conduct

Students and employees at Oakton Community College are required to demonstrate academic integrity and follow Oakton's Code of Academic Conduct. This code prohibits:

• plagiarism (turning in work not written by you, or lacking proper citation),
• falsification and fabrication (lying or distorting the truth),
• helping others to cheat,

• any other behavior that violates academic integrity.

There are serious consequences to violations of the academic integrity policy. Oakton's policies and procedures provide students a fair hearing if a complaint is made against you. If you are found to have violated the policy, the minimum penalty is failure on the assignment and, a disciplinary record will be established and kept on file in the office of the Vice President for Student Affairs for a period of 3 years.

VI.   Sequence of Topics

This area will be tailored to fit individual student needs, to emphasize their strengths, and to overcome their weaknesses. All lessons will include studies in technique and musicality using instructional materials suitable to the student’s level. In addition to these general guidelines, the following representative topics will be addressed:

  1. Continued development of skills learned in MUS 173.
  2. Memorization of all 12 minor scales (in all three forms: natural, harmonic and melodic) from tonic to tonic, throughout the range of the instrument.
  3. Application of basic theory in figuring all key signatures: major and minor, and their triad arpeggios.
  4. Completion of two listening reports, one of which is based on a recording or performance of one of the solo pieces selected for the semester concert. See section X of the applied clarinet course syllabus for additional information.
  5. Weekly sight-reading, orchestral and etude studies from the standard collegiate study repertoire.

VII.  Methods of Instruction

Weekly lesson will include lectures, explanation and demonstration of skills.

Course may be taught as face-to-face, hybrid or online course.

VIII. Course Practices Required

  1. Read and abide by the list of applied lesson policies handed out at the beginning of the term.
  2. Weekly attendance at private lessons is required.
  3. Practice and be willing to devote enough time to individual instruction. (A minimum of six hours of practice per week is required.)
  4. Listening and reading assignments will be required. (Topics to be discussed.)
  5. Performance of two short solo pieces or movements with accompaniment in a semester concert.

IX.   Instructional Materials

Repertoire is assigned according to the student’s level of playing ability and include representative compositions from the different musical periods.

X.    Methods of Evaluating Student Progress

Grade will be based on class attendance, preparedness and progress a student makes in his/her playing during the semester.
