III.   Course (Catalog) Description

Courses offer private study in specialized areas. Strongly recommended that student who desires to study piano, voice, etc. complete all class levels offered for that particular instrument (class piano, class voice, etc.). Intent of applied music is to increase ability to perform more advanced music from all periods and styles. Arrangements must be made through the music faculty who arrange lessons in piano, voice, band and orchestra instruments.

  1. To perform music artistically from a variety of periods, styles, and repertoire.
  2. To develop listening and critical thinking skills through self-evaluation of performance.

V.    Academic Integrity and Student Conduct

Students and employees at Oakton Community College are required to demonstrate academic integrity and follow Oakton's Code of Academic Conduct. This code prohibits:

• plagiarism (turning in work not written by you, or lacking proper citation),
• falsification and fabrication (lying or distorting the truth),
• helping others to cheat,

• any other behavior that violates academic integrity.

There are serious consequences to violations of the academic integrity policy. Oakton's policies and procedures provide students a fair hearing if a complaint is made against you. If you are found to have violated the policy, the minimum penalty is failure on the assignment and, a disciplinary record will be established and kept on file in the office of the Vice President for Student Affairs for a period of 3 years.

VI.   Sequence of Topics

This area will be tailored to fit individual student needs, to emphasize their strengths, and to overcome their weaknesses. All lessons will include studies in technique and musicality using instructional materials suitable to the student’s level. In addition to these general guidelines, the following representative topics will be addressed:

    Level of Material
    Concerto in C Major by Haydn, Boccherin Concerto in B-Flat Major, Brahms E-Minor Sonata, Bach Solo Suite Number One in G Major, shorter pieces by Faure, Haydn, Bartok, Sonatas by Francouer, Shostakovich and Grieg
  2. Technique
    Exercises
    1. Daily exercises by Louis Feuillard
    2. Scales in four octaves—major and minor
    3. Arpeggios
    4. Scales in double-stops-thirds and octaves
    5. Paul Matz thumb position exercises
  3. Sight-reading
    Level of Material
    Vivaldi Concerti Orchestral Studies Volumes 1 and 2 (Rose Editions)
  4. Performance
    Student recital each semester
  5. Transposition
    Transposition of Beethoven sonatas, up and down two steps
  6. Keyboard Harmony
    Level of Material
    Composition of more complex accompaniments to Suzuki Books 5 - 7 songs

VII.  Methods of Instruction

Weekly lesson will include lectures, explanation and demonstration of instrumental skills.


Course may be taught as face-to-face, hybrid or online course.

VIII. Course Practices Required

  1. Read and abide by the list of applied lesson policies handed out at the beginning of the term.
  2. Weekly attendance at private lessons is required.
  3. Practice and be willing to devote enough time to individual instruction. (A minimum of six hours of practice per week is required.)
  4. Listening and reading assignments. (Topics to be discussed.)
  5. Performance of one short solo piece or movement with accompaniment in a semester concert.

Repertoire is assigned according to the student’s level of playing ability and includes representative compositions from the different musical periods.

X.    Methods of Evaluating Student Progress

Grade will be based on class attendance, preparedness and progress a student makes in his/her playing instrument during the semester.
