Learn the basics in this 10-week course, from turning

LITERATURE OF NEW ORLEANS 3 credits
The purpose of this course will be to read works of literature that take place
in and around New Orleans, in an attempt to understand this city's unique
culture and historical consciousness. Read books by important modern New Orleans
writers such as Walker Percy (The Movie Goer),
John Kennedy O'Toole (Confederacy of Dunces),
and Christine Wiltz (Glass House). We also
will read fiction that captures historical New Orleans in important ways
such as The Awakening by Kate Chopin, and
Old Creole Days by George Washington Gable.
We will supplement these novels with short stories and memoirs about New
Orleans and its historical and cultural environment.

THE HISTORY OF THE CRUSADES 3 credits
Beginning in 1096 and lasting for about 250 years,
the crusades helped shape the political, social, and cultural life of the
medieval world. This course, taught by Professor Robert Gourley, defines "crusade" within
its proper historical context, explores the myriad causes of the crusading
phenomena, and examines the consequences of crusading on the Western world.

INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC THEATER
3 credits
This survey of music theater covers selected major works from the opera, operetta,
musicals and ballet. It traces musical, dramatic, and stylistic development
from the year 1600 to the present. The cultural framework that gave rise to
these art forms is an integral part of the course. Prerequisite: HUM 125 is
recommended.
