THE BEGINNING OF THE SILK ROAD: HAN AND
TANG DYNASTY CHINA - FEE: $25 individual class
The name “Silk Road” comes from the precious silks from China
that made their way via caravans to points north, west, and south. However,
silk was not the only item traded along the Silk Road. Jade also came from
China, but horses, gold, and other precious materials were introduced to
China from points west. It was Chang'an, the capital city of both the Han
(206 B.C.E. – C.E. 220) and Tang (618 – 907 C.E.) dynasties, where the Silk
Road began. We'll look at the splendid results of this trading boom, as
manifest in magnificent tomb art and a period of religious tolerance.

FROM THE SOUTH: THE SPREAD OF BUDDHISM ALONG
THE SILK
ROAD - FEE: $25 individual class
Started in northern India by the historic Buddha, Shakyamuni
(c.563 – 483
B.C.E.), Buddhism had spread to the east and north by the turn of the millennium.
It was at this same time that a rich artistic tradition and iconography
emerged in Buddhist practice, which flourished in places like Cambodia,
China, Nepal, Japan, and Korea. This lecture considers the spread of
the faith as well as the development of style in Buddhist art.

FROM THE MIDDLE EAST: THE SPREAD OF ISLAM ALONG
THE SILK
ROAD - FEE: $25 individual class
Islam originated in the Arabian peninsula in the seventh century
C.E., with Arabic as its sacred language and Mecca as its holiest of sites.
Within 100 years, Islam had spread throughout Asia, as well as into parts
of Europe and Northern Africa. As Islam spread across Asia, interactions
with Turks and Mongols produced varied and magnificent styles in all art
forms, including architecture, manuscripts, and sacred objects. Explore
Islam's contributions and the great Islamic centers of art such as Samark
and Isfahan.

THE END OF THE SILK ROAD: VENETIAN
ART - FEE: $25 individual class
Certainly the tales of Marco Polo's travels to China between 1271
and 1295 provided great wonderment to the curious and worldly minds of the
middle ages. But Marco Polo was just one of many who passed through the international
port of Venice bearing ideas and objects from Asia and providing inspiration
to countless artists, writers, and thinkers. This lecture covers the influence
of Eastern style on Venetian art and architecture from the middle ages through
the fall of the Venetian Republic in 1797.

make us much happier. We'll look at the historical connections among these
three issues and discuss the impact of money on our lives and loves. A resource

threat from illegal poaching, hunting, and rapid deforestation. Wildlife
S.O.S. is a nonprofit wildlife rescue organization founded 10 years ago
by conservationists Kartick Satyanarayanan and Geeta Sehamani. Their journey
began on the Delhi-Agra highway, when they witnessed sloth bears being exploited
and tortured as they were forced to dance for tourists. Join them to hear

GLIMPSES OF NORTH KOREA: THE TRUE
HERMIT KINGDOM - FEE: $15
Walter Keats first visited North Korea (the Democratic Peoples
republic of Korea, DPRK) in 1995, and returned again in 2000, 2002, and

while traveling the length and width of the country over the past 11 years.
Among other attractions he will reintroduce us to the DMZ, Panmunjom, and
the USS Pueblo, now moored in Pyongyang. Keats studied anthropology at Harvard
College and attended the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business.
In addition to being executive director of the Geographic Society of Chicago,
Keats is president of a tour company that in 1978 was one of the first U.S.
companies to offer commercial tours to China, and is currently one of only
two U.S. companies authorized to bring Americans to North Korea.
