Filmmaker and composer Bob Dahlin introduces you to some of the most poignant, ethereal, and breathtaking works ever composed—sung by some of the world’s greatest voices. Students take home 10 hours of music and video clips on CDs created especially for the class. No class on 4/19.

Summer 2012

New
The Life and Music of Richard Wagner        Fee: $112
Take a closer look at the life and music of controversial composer Richard Wagner. Robert Yaffe, teacher/lover of opera, will use audio and DVD excerpts to guide you through Wagner’s great operas, including Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Lohengrin, Tannhäuser, and Tristan und Isolde -- works that include some of the most magnificent music ever composed. And yet, Wagner’s reputation is marred by his rabid anti-Semitism. Examine his influence on the Third Reich, the Israeli ban on his music, and the almost cult-like status of “Wagnerians.” Is the music itself anti-Semitic? Examine three of Wagner’s operas and reach your own conclusion.
