Which Term? When registering online, you need to know which term your class is in. Here is how to tell: Fall classes have a -0 in the course code (e.g., ART C79-04). Summer classes have a -3 in the course code (e.g., ART C79-31). In addition, Fall CRN numbers begin with 6, (e.g., CRN 62081). Summer CRN numbers begin with 5 (e.g., CRN 50543). Please do not  put two terms on the same registration form! e.g: Spring and Summer.

Experiment with pencil, charcoal, crayon, pen, and brush drawings of still life and human figures. The instructor is an experienced artist who has taught for us for many years.

This course is for beginners as well as those students who may have missed basic drawing, or wish to review the principles and fundamental practices of drawing. Expand your drawing abilities by acquiring the basic organizing skills of shape and measurement, linear perspective, and value. Learn how to plan the work steps involved in each successful drawing.

The best way to enjoy drawing is to understand how to study and practice it success- fully. This class will focus on expressing the illusion of form in space, which is not only an exciting area of study but paramount skill for the visual artist. PAINTING WITH OIL         FEE: $175
Work with oil using still life, portraits and figures.  Learn color, composition and values.  Supplies: Palette knife, palette cups, qt. mineral spirits, bristle filberts #2, 4, 6 and 8, canvas panel (14x18 or 16x20). The following paint colors: ivory black, burnt sienna, raw sienna, alizarin crimson, cadmium red (lt or med) cadmium orange, cadmium yellow light, viridian, ultra marine blue, titanium white.

PEN, BRUSH, AND INK ILLUSTRATION    FEE: $98
Students will learn the proper use of tools and media; the basics of brush control; hatch and cross-hatch shading; how to effectively combine line and wash; spotting blacks for illustrations; and how to create final pencil art to be rendered in ink. Course will combine group discussion, instructor demonstration, and a special sketchbook project. A list of needed supplies will be sent to registrants.

CHARACTER DESIGN 101            FEE: $135
Concept art and character design play an exciting and essential role in the visual entertainment industry. The class will use copious instructor demonstration and coaching to aid the beginning as well as experienced artist in taking a giant step toward the development of a creator owned character. We will survey constructive approaches to drawing, build visual interpretation skills, and be introduced design strategies that create consistent and captivating characters. No class 4/7.

STONE SCULPTURE WORKSHOPS: ALL LEVELS           FEE: $175
Explore the fundamentals of stone sculpture with master sculptor, Bob Brower. Muscle is not required – only hand/eye coordination and patience. Start with the rough stone, learn all the necessary techniques, including hammer and chisel, rasps, files, sanding and polishing . . . end with a finished art piece. A materials fee of $100 is payable to the instructor in class, and includes your first alabaster stone, tools and work stand. Individualized instruction will be stressed. FUN WITH CLAY           FEE: $175
Study the foundations of ceramics. Learn and practice basic hand-building and pottery techniques. Small class allows individual attention while others complete projects. All skill levels are invited! Instructor is an accomplished artist whose work has been featured in a number of exhibitions and galleries. Low-fire clay, glazes, and class materials are included in the cost of tuition.

Crafts

STAINED GLASS ART           FEE: $120
Students will learn glass cutting techniques, tool usage, soldering, and how to work with lead and copper foil. Students will complete three unique projects. The lab fee is $125 (payable in class) and includes a tool kit, chemicals, glass, lead, zinc, and solder arc. The third class project will cost $40-75 (payable in class), based on individual glass selections. No previous experience is needed. Classes meet at Stained Glass Emporium, 4031 Oakton Street, Skokie. No senior discount.

FASHION DESIGN:
SKETCHING AND PATTERN MAKING           FEE: $125
If fashion is your passion, learn how to develop drawing skills and fashion illustration techniques. Then, take the next step and design an original garment from first sketch to completed pattern. Explore the techniques that professional designers use in clothing construction, fitting, and pressing. Fabric choices and pattern manipulation also will be explored. Note: This is not a sewing class, but the instructor will advise students on how to turn a pattern into a wearable garment.

CONCEPTS OF FLORAL DESIGN               FEE: $100
Learn the fundamentals of floral design and how to create floral arrangements that add beauty of flowers to home and office settings. Weekly themes include: rounded colonial style arrangement; a one-sided triangular piece; flowers arranged in a basket; a one-sided L shape design; a long low centerpiece; and arranging flowers in a vase. The instructor, Robert Neri, is an experienced floral designer, and owner of Robert’s Flower and Design Studio in Chicago. A required materials fee of $15 per week is payable to the instructor at the first class session.

LIFETIME CRAFTS: KNITTING AND CROCHETING            FEE: $175
Learn the simple-to-complex "ins and outs" of both of these ageless crafts. Instruction will include four weeks each of basic skill development, helpful hints, ongoing assistance, and the completion of several student-selected, handmade projects. All skill levels are welcome. Please bring a pair of size 9 knitting needles, and a ball of cotton yarn to the first class. The registration fee does not include supplies. Students will receive instruction on purchasing their own materials, for their select projects.

CREATING WITH MOSAICS                FEE: $150
Develop a sense of design, balance, and artistic harmony while learning about the application of materials. Students are asked to bring rotary tile nippers, and an appropriate item to mosaic, such as a 10-inch terra cotta flower pot, or item with a rigid surface. All other materials are provided.

Imagination has no limits when it comes to beading! Express yourself and impress your friends by learning to make gorgeous jewelry pieces. Course offers comprehensive and practical study of jazz band idiom. Involves performance with the award-winning Oakton Jazz Band; sectional and ensemble discussion and scheduled rehearsal of various jazz band works, along with public performance. Student compositions encouraged. Recommended: Two years of instruction on the instrument, experience in jazz ensemble performance and audition. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. Course introduces potentials and realities of digital photography.Digital darkroom is constructed and necessary software explored. Content includes fundamentals of photography and their relation to digital imaging, basic electronic imaging principles, and scanning techniques.

Course surveys production, manipulation and output of photographic images electronically. BEGINNING PHOTOGRAPHY*         Fee: $323
Course explains basic photography. Student, using their own cameras, explore basics of film exposure, development and printing. Focus is on realizing cameras ability to record fine delineation of tone and detail using black and white materials. Content includes use of studio cameras, studio lighting, brief history and basic aesthetics of photography. Studio work outside of regular class time required. Students are expected to buy their own film and paper. Total cost of these items is approximately $100 in addition to the regular lab fee. The student who does not own a camera, tripod or light meter may borrow these items from the College by paying a refundable deposit fee.
