THREE STEPS TO WRITING A GOOD ESSAY

What is an Essay?
An essay is a short piece of writing in which a writer expresses his or her views about a particular subject. It should have several paragraphs, good organization (an introduction, a body, and a conclusion) and well supported opinions.

You will have 50 minutes to write your essay. It is a good idea to plan how you will use the time.

STEP I PLAN: 5-10 minutes
Take time to read the topics carefully. Make sure you understand them, and then select the one that you feel you have the most ideas about.

After you choose the question, plan how you will organize and develop your essay. Notice that each topic asks you to state your opinion about an issue. It is important to state clearly your opinion in you introductory paragraph. Before you begin to write, think of some reason to support your opinion, write your notes on the page provided in the booklet.

Careful planning will make the actual writing of your essay easier and should help you to write a better paper.

STEP II WRITE: 30-40 minutes
If you have taken time to plan, most of the hard work should be over by the time you begin writing the actual essay.

Each of your paragraphs should focus on one of your reasons and provide enough support. You should write as much as you need in order to answer the question well; that is, give sufficient detail.

STEP III REVIEW: 5-10 minutes
Re-read your essay carefully. Check for grammar errors or omitted words. Check for content as well as mechanics. Try to make your corrections neatly.
