The students who attended the ILAEOPP Seminar, none of whom had ever been to Washington, DC, were truly moved by the experience. Andrei Hastings, for example, wrote a great Occurrence article (“Oakton students lobby against education cuts in DC”). One thing he noted in the article was, “The striking scenery that greeted us at our drop-off site, the Smithsonian Institute, was enough to ensure that we forgot our woes [from a long bus-ride]. I was overwhelmed by the grand architecture and its striking similarity to the great Roman Empire—great columns, gigantic statues, buildings that unlike that of Chicago spanned horizontally rather than vertically. The stately atmosphere was enough to remind one that we were in the cradle of power of the most powerful nation on earth.”
Similarly moved, Cheryl May wrote that visiting DC, “was an incredible opportunity for personal growth as well as being a fantastic chance for me to experience some of the beauty of our United States. . . . It helped me feel more connected to the college community as a whole and in terms of academics, the trip allowed me to expand my horizons. I was able to see that there are educational opportunities |
everywhere. The Smithsonian Institute, for example, was a place I had long ago written off as being somewhere I would pursue internships. After having been there in person, all of my preconceived notions have fallen to the wayside. The DC trip has helped me to see that there is more possibility than I could have imagined.” Finally, Steve Panenka wrote, “I thoroughly enjoyed myself. We sure packed a lot into a short time [5 days]. I enjoyed our time together as a group. We all got along so well that made it all the more better.”
Thanks to all the students who made the MAEOPP and ILAEOPP Leadership trips a huge success. We had a blast. Didn't we?! We learned a lot about ourselves and peers all over the country too. Special thanks also go out to the BSA for helping to cover the cost of the ILAEOPP trip to DC. Kristine and Alison hope you'll join us for these and other TRiO events this year. We should have a third advisor on board by the time the MAEOPP Adult Student Leadership conference comes around, so it will be a great opportunity to meet him/her.
