Who are our writing tutors? |
| |
Our
writing tutors are part-time English faculty members, who have taught
many of the English courses at Oakton. As a result, they are familiar
with the content of these courses. In addition, they are knowledgeable
about many courses in other disciplines, which require papers. |
| |
Who might benefit from writing help? |
| |
Currently registered
students are welcome to make a weekly half-hour individual appointment
or to drop-in during Open Lab. Students do not need to be registered
in an English class to come for tutoring. In fact, many students
seek help in writing their papers for classes in other disciplines,
including sociology, psychology, the humanities and early childhood
education. While our tutors many not be able to comment on the content
area, they are able to provide general writing support. |

How can I prepare best for a tutoring session? |
- Plan to
get to the session on-time.
- Bring your
textbook and assignment directions.
- Prior to
meeting your tutor, decide on a specific topic.
- Prepare
any questions you have.
- Bring a
graded paper for the class if it is your initial visit.
- Recall
that the more actively you participate in the session, the more
profitable the session will be.
|
How can we help you? |
- We will
help you develop your writing skills and become an independent
learner.
- If you
have not decided on a topic, we can help you in selecting a
topic. In addition, we will discuss your concerns about the
organization and development of your ideas.
- We will
help you become better at writing papers.
|
|
| While
we may read your draft, we will not proofread your paper. We will
note patterns of errors but will not discuss every error with you.
While clarifying, any errors, we may give you some explanatory handouts,
grammar exercises or even recommend some computer programs for review. |
