THE TWELFTH ANNUAL

MEN’S

DAY

Session I
11:15 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

MEN AND SHAMANISM: DANCING ON THE EDGE OF THE SWORD
Gregory Baldauf, Paul Johnson, Don Flerlage and Bill Janssens. This program will explore the world of Inka shamanism. Power in the Inka Tradition is Tuki Muyna Neo, “the power of unconditional love.” Our discussion will focus on the Andian Pachas and the archetype of the Jaguaur, Otorongo. We also will journey into the metaphor of the Luminous Warrior—the warrior who has no enemy in this world or any other.

MEN AND STEPPARENTING
Tom Dix. This workshop focuses on the structural differences between stepfamilies and “bio-families,” particularly those that deal with distinguishing realistic from unrealistic expectations, expressing grief, common stepfamily patterns, and setting boundaries.

GROWING UP WITH ANGER AND GRIEF
Jack Dohr. This presentation and interactive workshop encourages participants to share their experiences. Focus is on coping skills for the maturing male—from age 7 to 70.

CONTACTING THE INNER ALLY: RELAXING BRAIN WAVES TO REGAIN BALANCE
David Fireman. Learn how powerful tools such as deep relaxation and guided imagery can help us live more effectively. Participants will receive brief outlines of the uses of relaxed brain wave states. Then, experience the tradition of the inner ally—a real or symbolic being who embodies deep caring, skillful means, and universal wisdom.

COMING OF AGE IN AMERICA
Raymond Reed Hardy. Adolescents in our society live in developmental limbo for up to 15 years, from puberty to mid-20’s. In this workshop, participants will explore a range of related developmental difficulties, and learn how and why a dramatic and powerful rite of passage at puberty can prudently address these problem issues.

FINDING YOUR TEENAGE FIRE
Charles Heisinger. This workshop is an experiential and didactic invitation to mentoring boys.

FORTUNE FAILURES: BLESSINGS OF THE TRICKSTER
Paul Kachoris. If he is courageous enough to not despair, failure in a man’s life can hold unforeseen opportunity. Embracing “failure” paves the way for man to experience a “second chance”—if he can withstand the related agony and suffering.

THE TRANSFORMATION OF UNAVOIDABLE PAIN AND SUFFERING: THE NECESSARY CONDITION TO GROWTH
Philip Metres. Most people make an attempt to avoid pain and suffering. We hope somehow to get on “easy street,” cutting corners to find the safe route to success and happiness. Yet, life has a funny way of forcing us to suffer, strive, and surrender our fantasies so that we may transform our immaturities and grow into adulthood
