MEN’S DAY

Sunday, November 19, 2006
8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Des Plaines Campus

A Note to Women: Although this program is designed for men, women are welcome. In keeping with the spirit of the day, please bring a man with you—husband, father, son, friend, brother, relative, or any other significant male in your life. Please note that due to their sensitive nature some programs may be intended for men only.

For Oakton Students: Scholarships to attend Men’s Day are available. Interested students are encouraged to contact Bea Cornelissen, Office of College Advancement (Room 1144, Des Plaines campus), 847-635-1812 to apply for a Men’s Day Scholarship.

Session II
1:45 - 3 p.m.

MYTH OF MALE POWER
Warren Farrell.
What is real power? This interactive journey will help participants understand how men have defined power as feeling obligated to earn money that someone else spends while they die sooner. Why is a man’s single most important decision the choice of a life partner? What is man’s greatest vulnerability? What skills are most important for an empowered life?

THE INFLUENCE OF MEDIA ON MASCULINITY
Kenn Skorupa.
This presentation will look at the media images and messages that influence masculinity and male development in our society. Participants are encouraged to reflect on and share their own views and experiences.

MEN’S ISSUES IN SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND RECOVERY
John Tuttle.
Men face a variety of specific issues with regard to substance abuse, especially peer pressure from an early age to join the party. This workshop will examine how men get caught up in the cycle of substance abuse, as well as how they can recover.

COMMUNICATING WITHOUT WORDS: ASSET OR LIABILITY?
Christopher Miller.
We will explore how each of us—intentionally or not—communicates with others in non-verbal ways. Learn how to increase awareness of these communications and the choices we make in how we impact others.

PURPOSEFUL AND PEACEFUL LIVING AFTER 50
Steve Wallman and Alan Levin.
How can men live their later years with greater hope, heart, and health? How can they maintain a vital sense of purpose, connection, and community? Join us to discuss opportunities for men’s work after age 50, and to learn more about the Wisdom Years Weekend, a retreat sponsored by Victories of the Heart.

MEN BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS
Kurt Schultz and Rick Simon.
Men often feel stuck in their lives, experiencing a sense of isolation and a difficulty in building satisfying, intimate relationships. This workshop describes Victories of the Heart and its Initial Victories Weekend, where men look deep within themselves to discover the blocks that hold them back, and methods for changing their lives for the better.

FATHERING: EVERYMAN’S WALK
Joseph Kilikevice.
How will our sons take their place in fathering other men? Whether marked by healthy mentoring or abandonment and abuse, fathers and sons live their lives within a unique relationship. The blessing we long for is every man’s birthright and is given and received throughout the male journey. Consider the powerful possibilities in this presentation.

MEN AND THE MOTHER WITHIN: WORKING THROUGH THE MOTHER COMPLEX
Leonard Szymczak and Timothy Pedigo.
An essential component of men’s work is the inner mother—our internalized experiences of mothering. This workshop uses discussion, experiential exercises, and group process to help men explore and heal their inner mothers.

THE MEN’S ART FORUM
Andy Mitran and Dick Levon.
Learn how to build a safe container in which to explore your personal exposure and connection to art. Experience the wisdom of a circle of men, speaking honestly about the important elements of their creative lives.

CERAMICS AS A SOURCE OF GROWTH AND PLAY
Lou Pierozzi.
As men we sometimes forget to develop healthy outlets for creativity and play. Come to this experiential workshop to imagine and create with clay. (Workshop continues in Session III. Participants are encouraged to attend both sessions, but may attend only one.)
