| When Winifred
Godfrey first visited Guatemala in the mid-1970s, she was completely captivated
by the physical beauty of the country and its indigenous people. She was
especially fascinated by their glorious woven fabrics and costumes, as
well as their bearing and gentle spirit, and she was stimulated by the
Mayan culture's religious rituals and the people's simple daily life. The
political crisis in Guatemala in the early 1980s and its devastating effect
on the country’s natives encouraged Godfrey to document this rare Pre-Columbian
culture through her rich artistry. She returned to Guatemala in the 1990s,
visiting different villages and photographing their inhabitants. These
pictures provided the raw material for a series of monumental paintings
that capture the Mayan spirit of survival. |
