| The initials
K. V. appear in most of the paintings and mark the name of the artist's
deceased father. Ideas invoking perseverance, struggle, and renewal during
his treacherous escape from the perils of World War II to refuge in this
country motivated most of this work. It is a continuing investigation of
identity and respect for the integrity of materials. Rhythms of nature
predominate throughout the embedded skins of oil paint, wax and splinters
of wood.
The philosophical duality of ideas and the resolution of conflict are always present. Light next to dark, delicate versus bold, chaos yielding to order prevail simultaneously within each work. Ultimately these paintings are about confronting existence. The predominantly black and white selection of paint was a deliberate decision to imbue the work with documentary sensibility. Each painting continues to thrive on "Fragments of Refuge" by burying, scraping, contrasting and layering materials until the process has manifested itself within a densely layered landscape. |
