Dilemmas
in Jewish Art: Restrictions, Originality and Assimilation
.
Jewish
artists have been challenged to develop art in spite of the Second Commandment,
which prohibits the creation of any graven images. Facilitated by Nathan
Harpaz, manager and curator of the Koehnline Museum of Art, this presentation
will explore Jewish artists’ quest for original style, the influences of
non-Jewish styles on Jewish art and architecture, and the new challenges
facing artists after the re-establishment of Israel in modern time.
