explores the human capacity for love to foster new life, creativity, culture
and community as exemplified by the real life love story of Jeffrey Ventrella
and Nuala Creed. Jeffrey Ventrella’s computer fractals create a powerful
perceptual phenomenon that is inspired by the science of genetics. He uses
the techniques and implications of the Mandelbrot Set to generate ever-changing
fractals that act as “family portraits.” A flowing fractal portrait of
himself is projected against the inside of one end of a temporary “house”
built on location at the Koehnline Museum, and another computer projects
a fractal “family portrait” of Nuala against the opposite wall. Outside
the house Nuala Creed’s family of ceramic “Fledglings” represents the creative
offspring that can result from the love between two people. Towers
of children’s inflatable inner tube floating toys create a forest of
“pool-trees” over and around Nuala’s “Fledglings.” The mini-pools
symbolize our common “gene pool.”
