Sandra Perlow:
Swing

December 2002 - January 2003

In a world often defined by deceptive facades, Sandra Perlow's idiosyncratic paintings distract the viewer from blind acceptance of the status quo by summoning the corporeal reality of dormant memories. Her richly layered compositions of odd, vibrant, mutating shapes emerge from and disappear into vapor, establishing circuitous, unfamiliar paths from which to observe the world.

Perlow's studio is located in the aging epicenter of Chicago's Loop, a most appropriate setting for the creation of work that is infused with the visual and emotional tension of change. The raw, urban cadence of this environment resonates in the flickering, distorted grids of light and shadow cast by elevated trains. The space outside Perlow's loft - characterized by elegant design and worn surfaces, stillness and movement, order and unrest - foreshadows the unusual juxtapositions a visitor encounters upon entering the studio. Paintings and mixed media works on paper radiate the colors of exotic locales, heating up the cool light that fills the long, narrow space. Disheveled worktables covered by various raw materials are contrasted by the tranquility of a second-hand chair from which Perlow comfortably contemplates the stages of a painting.
