John Pitman Weber
Glancing Back

May - June 2000

Curator: Nathan Harpaz

Glancing Back is a series of works created in the last two years by muralist, easel painter and printmaker John Pitman Weber. Although it is difficult to separate Weber's life from his artistic philosophy, the autobiographical nature of the Glancing Back series reveals much about the artist's family and childhood. Weber created the series after studying family photographs at a transitory stage in life: middle age.
From the introduction of the exhibition's catalog

Weber invents a narrative style that is not linear but is more related to how we continuously reorganize the images of our lives, repeating or revisiting crucial moments. The exhibition Glancing Back illustrates how the reflective act of painting can reconnect the photograph with the emotional material of our lives.
