Summer is for shaping up in
a variety of fun classes offered by the Alliance for Lifelong Learning
at Oakton Community College. All featured courses meet at Prairie
View Community Center, 6834 Dempster Street, Morton Grove.
Gentle Moves (PED B01-32) is designed for individuals
whose health has been compromised due to being overweight, Type II
diabetes, arthritis, or high blood pressure. Students will perform
gentle movements to help improve their quality of life. Five-week
course meets 7:15 – 8:10 p.m., Monday and Wednesday, starting
July 7. Course fee is $95.
Strong and Long (PED E18-33) uses resistance and
flexibility training to increase blood flow, manage weight, and offset
bone loss. Workouts include the use of calisthenics, balls, and free
weights combined with lengthening and relaxation exercises. A five-week
course meets 8:40 – 9:40 a.m., Monday, starting July 7, and
another five-week course meets 8:40 – 9:40 a.m., Friday, starting
July 11. Course fee for either section is $48.
Spin and Tone (PED E03-33) offers a great cardio
workout on a stationary bike, followed by exercise to tone major muscle
groups. Course is modified to accommodate students at all fitness
levels. A five week course meets 7:30 – 8:20 p.m., Monday, starting
July 7, and another five-week course meets 7:30 – 8:20 a.m.,
Saturday, starting July 12. Course fee is $72.
Pilates (PED E04-32) is a method of exercise designed to
stretch, strengthen, and balance the body. Benefits include improved
lung capacity, circulation, and coordination. Five-week course meets
7:30 – 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, starting July 8. Course fee is $65.
Other available fitness classes include: Tai Chi for Arthritis
(PED C05-32), Senior Exercise (PED E53-33), Zumba
(PED S84-32), and Gentle Yoga (PED S13-33).
