Caregivers
and others who deal with end-of-life issues are invited to a one-day
symposium sponsored by Rainbow Hospice of Park Ridge and the Alliance
for Lifelong Learning at Oakton Community College. "Ethical Dilemmas
at the End of Life," featuring a free afternoon teleconference,
will be offered 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., Wednesday, April 20, at Oakton's
Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Road.
The
morning session features live expert presentations from Dennis Sanders,
staff ethicist, Resurrection Health Care, and Clint Moore, clinical
ethicist, Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. Participants will be
introduced to the fundamentals of ethics, and gain constructive advice
and tools for coping with the difficult circumstances surrounding
end-of-life care.
In the afternoon, Cokie Roberts, ABC News political commentator and
senior news analyst for National Public Radio, moderates "Living With
Grief," the Hospice Foundation of America's 12th annual teleconference.
Presented live via satellite, a group of prominent ethicists, educators,
gerontologists, and hospice experts will discuss values, ethics, and
the law in health care settings, and how cultural differences may
influence ethical choices, among other topics. The panel will be followed
by a 30-minute discussion and Q&A session.
Registration
fee of $50 includes a box lunch and Continuing Education Credits (morning
session only) for social workers, counselors, registered nurses, and
other professionals. The afternoon teleconference is free to attend,
but registration is required. Continuing education for the teleconference
only will be available for a fee through Hospice Foundation of America.
Box lunches may be reserved for $15 each; a $15 teleconference manual
also is available.
