Abarbanel are among the popular speakers scheduled for The
Many Faces of Hamlet, a three-week celebration of Shakespeare’s
influential tragedy, presented by the Emeritus Program at Oakton Community
College, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave., Skokie.
Registration for the entire 13-event series is $60; individual lectures
are $10 each.
The program opens 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., Monday, July 28, with
a look at Laurence Olivier’s Academy Award-winning portrayal
of the Danish prince. Halberstam, artistic director of the Writers’
Theatre, explores the production history of Shakespeare’s piece
of dramatic literature, 2:30 – 4 p.m., Monday, July 28. The
personality types and psychological issues found in Hamlet
will be related to current political figures, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.,
Tuesday, Aug. 5.
Throughout the festival, participants will be able to view and discuss
various film versions of Hamlet, including those starring
Mel Gibson and Ethan Hawke in the title role. In addition, students
will consider how Hamlet has influenced popular culture.
Abarbanel, WBEZ-FM drama critic, closes the festival 2:30 –
4 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 14, with an analysis of how the play remains
relevant in contemporary culture.
