Oakton Emeritus Focuses on History and Classic Literature

The Emeritus Program at Oakton Community College offers courses in military history and the epic poem, Beowulf, this summer. Featured courses meet at Oakton’s Skokie campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave.

Why Militarism? (HIS T93-91) examines the causes of militarism and which nations have been the most militaristic over the past 1,000 years. Three-week course meets Tuesday, 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m., staring July 1. Course fee is $50.

Beowulf Is Back: The Monster and Its Critics (HUM L02-91) discusses the 21st century popularity of Dark Age hero Beowulf. Students will read the epic’s latest translation by contemporary poet Seamus Heaney and watch the 2006 film, Beowulf & Grendel, starring Gerard Butler. Four-week course meets 2:30 – 4 p.m., Tuesday, starting July 1. Course fee is $50.
