Oakton Emeritus Program Goes on Location

The Emeritus Program at Oakton Community College takes its show "on the road" this fall, offering its popular lectures and noncredit classes at the Classic Residence by Hyatt in Glenview, Covenant Village in Northbrook, and the Frisbie Center in Des Plaines.

"We are excited to expand our programs to these three accessible satellite locations," says Leona Hoelting, director of Oakton's Emeritus program for the past 25 years. "Students will have the opportunity to cover a lot of ground, from the history of kamikaze pilots, to the study of civil war in Sri Lanka."

At the Classic Residence by Hyatt, located in The Glen, 2500 Indigo Lane, Glenview, Emeritus students may choose from the following offerings:
Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down, four Fridays, Aug. 19 and 26, September 2 and 9, 1:30 - 3 p.m. Join Karol Verson to discuss selected films from the fringes of Hollywood. Fee: $60.
People and Places, four Tuesdays, 1 -2:15 p.m. Enjoy "cultural tours" of Spain (Sept. 6), London (Sept. 20), and South Africa (Sept. 27), and consider the evolution of ethnic music in America during the 19th and 20th centuries (Sept. 14). Fees: In-district, $15; out of district, $20.

At Covenant Village, 2625 Techny Road, Northbrook, Emeritus students may choose from the following offerings:
Passages Seminars, six Thursdays, 1 - 2:15 p.m. Enjoy presentations on "Mexico and Guatemala" (Sept. 1); "Kamikazes: The First Suicide Bombers" (Sept. 8); "Suzanne Hales: Funny in Farsi" (Sept. 15); "Masters of the Baroque" (Sept. 22); "Hatshepsut and Ancient Egypt" (Sept. 29); and "The Lying Game: Confessions of a Fiction Writer (Oct. 6). Fees: In-district, $20; out of district, $25.
Passport to the World, four Tuesdays, 1 - 2:15 p.m. Topics to be discussed include "Sri Lanka Politics: Religions, History, and Civil War" (Oct. 11); "Palestinian/Israeli Conflict: A Critical Review of The Missing Peace" (Oct. 18); "Uganda" (Oct. 25); and "Lebanon: Land of the Phoenicians" (Nov. 1). Fees: In-district, $15; out of district, $20.
Disputes in the History of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, three Fridays, Oct. 14, 21, and 28, 10 - 11:15 a.m. Emeritus professor Bill Taylor examines three major issues from both perspectives. Fees: In-district, $20; out of district, $40.

At the Frisbie Center, 52 Northwest Highway, Des Plaines, students may choose from the following offerings:
What's Brewing in the News, four Mondays, Sept. 12, 19, and 26, and Oct. 3, 10 - 11:15 a.m. Join fellow "news junkies" to discuss current events. Fee: $50
Palestinian/Israeli Conflict: A Critical Review of The Missing Peace, Thursday, Oct. 6, 6 - 7:30 p.m. Emeritus professor Bill Taylor discusses chief U.S. negotiator Dennis Ross' recent analysis of the failure of Mideast peace talks between 1988 and 2000. Fee: $10.

Oakton's Emeritus Program offers credit and noncredit courses, lectures, seminars, and tours, while providing a chance to share learning experiences with peers age 50 and over.
