Enduring music masterpieces from Europe and America will be studied in several new courses offered this spring by the Oakton Community College Emeritus Program.Richard Wagner: Evil Genius (MUS E92-71, Touch-Tone 09004) surveys the life and works of Richard Wagner, one of the world's most controversial composers. Join Robert Yaffe to explore Wagner's influence on the Third Reich and Israel's censorship of his music. This six-week class meets from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Fridays, beginning April 11, at the Ray Hartstein Campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave., Skokie. The course fee is $50.
Great Women of Opera (MUS E79-71, Touch-Tone 08749) takes an in-depth look at opera's most fascinating female characters, including Violetta in Verdi's La Traviata and Manon in Puccini's Manon Lescault. This four-week class meets from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning April 22, at the Ray Hartstein Campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave., Skokie. The course fee is $50.
Other available music courses include Symphony Lovers: First Things First (MUS E77), Music of the American Stage (MUS E80), Building a Piano Recording Collection: From Argerich to Zimerman (MUS E90), and Reel Classics: Documenting the Hollywood Musical (MUS E91).
