2006-07 Lyric Opera Season at Oakton
Preview
the Lyric Opera of Chicago's 2006-2007 season by enrolling in sessions
offered by the Emeritus Program at Oakton Community College. This
seven-week course meets 1 - 3 p.m., starting Friday, Oct. 13, at Oakton's
Ray Hartstein Campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave., Skokie. Course fee is
$100.
Previews include background information on the composer and the opera,
highlighted by audio and video excerpts. Scheduled sessions include:
- Turandot
(Oct. 13), Puccini's masterpiece about an exotic Chinese princess
who challenges her suitors to answer three impossible riddles.

Iphigenie en Tauride (Oct. 20), a rare 1779 masterpiece by
Gluck.
- Salome
(Oct. 27), Richard Strauss' opera based on an Oscar Wilde play.

Il Trovatore (Nov. 3), Verdi's tale of two brothers who fight
over a woman.
- Die
Fledermaus (Nov. 10), a comic opera overflowing with the infectious
melodies of Vienna's "Waltz King," Johann Strauss.

Cosi Fan Tutte (Nov. 17), a comic collaboration between Mozart
and Lorenzo de Ponte on the topic of fidelity.
- Dialogues
of the Carmelites (Dec. 1), based on a true story from the Reign
of Terror, set in 1794 France.
Oakton's
Emeritus Program offers credit and noncredit courses, lectures, seminars,
and tours, while providing a chance to share learning experiences
with peers age 50 and over.
