Usher
in Valentine's Day with a free concert at Oakton Community College
by New Quartet, a classical chamber ensemble that also plays
jazz and world music. The concert takes place Thursday, Feb. 12, noon
- 1 p.m., in the cafeteria at the Ray Hartstein Campus, 7701 N. Lincoln
Ave., Skokie.
Sponsored
by Oakton's Emeritus Program and Robert Morris College, the concert
will feature traditional love songs to commemorate Valentine's Day.
New Quartet's standard repertoire includes chamber music by Bach,
Mozart, Bartok, and Stravinsky, as well as jazz classics by Duke Ellington.
Participants also will enjoy a sampling of world music, including
tangos by Astor Piazzolla and compositions by South Africa's Abdullah
Ibrahim.
New Quartet
is comprised of bassist Doug Lofstrom, former composer-in-residence
for the Metropolis Symphony Orchestra; violinist James Sanders, a
member of the Latin jazz group Conjunto; multi-reedist Michael Levin,
who has performed with artists such as Diane Schuur and the Temptations;
pianist Leandro Lopez-Varady, who has toured with Eldee Young; and
percussionist Sarah Allen, one-time member of the Jellyeye dance and
drumming ensemble.
