Earn New Human Resource Certificate at Oakton

Designed for experienced human resource professionals, as well as those interested in a possible HR career, Oakton Community College announces the availability of a new Human Resource Specialist Certificate. Now, HR professionals have an easy and cost-effective way to update their skills - especially vital since last October's deadline for compliance of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

This flexible certificate program allows participants to customize course work to meet their current job needs. Classes are offered at the Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Road:

Preparation for the National Certification Exam for PHR and SPHR Credentials (MGT 290-001) meets Wednesdays, 2:30 - 5:50 p.m., starting Feb. 11. This eight-week course provides a review of materials to prepare for the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) credential exam. The cost of this two credit hour class is $116, plus a $25 application fee and $15 registration fee.

NOTE: This year's credential exam will be given in May. For application details and deadlines, visit the Human Resource Certification Institute online at www.HRCI.org.

Human Resource Management (MGT 165) meets Tuesdays, 6:30 - 10 p.m., starting Jan. 20. This 10-week course covers topics such as managing conflict, change, and diversity; staffing and training; and employee evaluation and compensation.

Human Resource Management Law (MGT 268) meets Tuesdays, 6:30 - 10 p.m., starting April 6. This six-week course covers topics in Fair Labor Standards, Family Medical Leave, COBRA, HIPPA, Discrimination Laws, and Harassment Laws.

Training and Development (MGT 170) meets Thursdays, 6:30 - 10 p.m., beginning March 4. Topics in this 10-week course include training responsibility, working with training vendors, setting up an internal training program, adult learners, and employee development.
