Older adults can pursue new interests while enjoying the company of their peers at classes offered by Oakton Community College's Emeritus program.
Several art courses begin soon at the Ray Hartstein Campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave., Skokie. Techniques in Drawing (ART B93-61, Touch-Tone 05199) meets for eight weeks from 10 a.m.-noon on Mondays, beginning Oct. 15. Course fee is $110.
Studio I (ART B15-61, Touch-Tone 02822) instructs novice artists in the basics of painting in oils or acrylics. Studio II (ART B16-61, Touch-Tone 02835) gives more experienced artists the opportunity to compare techniques and overcome weaknesses by working with other painters. These eight-week classes meet from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, beginning Oct. 10. Course fee for each painting class is $140.
Newcomers to contract bridge will benefit from Beginning Bridge (REC S60-61, Touch-Tone 02578) taught by a patient and fully accredited bridge teacher. This eight-week class meets from 1 -3 p.m. on Wednesdays, beginning Oct. 17. Course fee is $128.
Advanced Bridge (REC S64-61, Touch-Tone 02572) is a skills-building class for advanced players. Students at separate tables play the same pre-arranged hands, followed by instructions on how to bid and play each hand. Questions are encouraged. An accredited teacher of the American Contract Bridge League teaches the newest bidding conventions and subtle playing skills in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. This eight-week class meets from 1-3 p.m. on Mondays, beginning Oct. 15. Course fee is $128.
Students age 60 and older who live in Oakton's district pay half the listed fee. A registration fee of $5 is required for students under 60 and for those who live out of district. Proof of age and residency must be provided at registration. Persons who have enrolled at Oakton or ALL classes within the last five years and have a Social Security number on file may register using the Touch-Tone system by calling (847) 635-1616. Touch-Tone registration requires payment using a major credit card (Visa, MasterCard or Discover).
