The resiliency
of a nation will be portrayed during the Performing Arts at Oakton's
multimedia production of "Voices of Biro-Bidjan," March 11
- 21, in the Koehnline Gallery at Oakton Community College, 1600 E.
Golf Road.
This
original performance, written and directed by Karol Verson, highlights
the courage of those settlers who struggled to create a Jewish homeland
in Biro-Bidjan, a bitter cold wilderness territory located thousands
of miles from European Russia. The play is inspired by a collection
of woodcuts created in 1937 by 14 Chicago WPA artists as a fundraising
project.
Performances
of "Voices of Biro-Bidjan" are Thursday, March 11 at 8 p.m.; Friday,
March 12 at 8 p.m.; Saturdays, March 13 and 20 at 8 p.m.; and Sundays,
March 14 and 21 at 2 p.m. Admission is free, but reservations are
required. For more information or to make reservations, call Karol
Verson at 847-635-2185.
During
the play's run, Oakton curator Nathan Harpaz will present "A Gift
to Biro Bidjan: From Despair to New Hope," an introduction to
the original woodcuts and other paintings by those artists who supported
Biro-Bidjan. Harpaz's lecture is Wednesday, March 3 at 1 p.m. in the
Koehnline Gallery. The woodcuts will be on display through April 2.
Admission
is free and the public is invited. Koehnline Gallery is open Mondays,
Tuesdays, and Fridays, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Wednesdays and Thursdays,
10 a.m. - 6 p.m.

information, contact Nathan Harpaz at 847-635-2633.
