The NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt will be on display at Oakton Community College from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 27 - Thursday, Nov. 29. Visitors can view panels of the quilt at both the Des Plaines campus, 1600 East Golf Road, and the Ray Hartstein Campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave. in Skokie. The display is part of a weeklong schedule of events in observance of World Aids Day on Saturday, Dec. 1.
The quilt was conceived in 1985 by long-time gay rights activist Cleve Jones as a way to commemorate the lives that have been cut short by AIDS. In its entirety, the AIDS Quilt contains more than 44,000 panels, each one a memorial sewn together by the friends, lovers and family members of those who died from the disease. The quilt was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in1989, and is a powerful visual reminder of the enormity of the AIDS pandemic. It remains the largest community art project in the world.
Other events and activities scheduled during the week include educational workshops that address contemporary issues related to HIV/AIDS, and staged readings of "A Question of Mercy," a powerful drama about dying with dignity by acclaimed playwright David Rabe.
